Is masturbating a sin?

Are there any Bible scriptures or quotes about masturbation?

Some people, especially some young adults, might believe that masturbation is an essential part of their lives, and they might be quite adamant about their belief.  On the other hand, many people believe that our Father in Heaven, God (YaH), is an essential part of their lives, and they are quite adamant about their belief.  One major difference between the two beliefs is that masturbation is a very fleeting moment of physical release, while our Father will always be with the people who believe and accempt Him into their hearts (1 John 2:15-17).  The fact that our Father takes His believers to be with Him in Heaven for eternity is the ultimate gratification.  Being overwhelmingly filled with The Holy Spirit is one of the most wonderful gifts a person can ever receive.

The Holy Spirit can be so powerful that it is capable of miracles (Matthew 21:21).  The Holy Spirit can give a believer so much self-control that the believer will not be tempted by sexual immorality, and any other targeted sin.  The longer a believer avoids sinning, the more powerful The Holy Spirit becomes.  The more powerful The Holy Spirit becomes, the easier it is to avoid sinning.  However, an essential fact to learn is that the power of The Holy Spirit within a person can be grieved and quenched due to that person committing any kind of sin (Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-24).  The more often a person sins, the more quenched The Holy Spirit becomes, and the harder the punishments can become (Isaiah 63:10, Hebrews 10:26-31).  Our Father, YaH, allows these punishments as a wake up call for a person to stop sinning and return to a more righteous lifestyle (Matthew 18:12-14).

To answer the age old question, The Holy Bible does reference the act of masturbation, but the reference is in regard to situations of possible adultery.  "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart...And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell" (Matthew 5:28,30 (NIV)).

Interestingly, the wording used in the scripture about the act of masturbation in regard to possible adultery is not identical to the wording used for the act of masturbation in regard to single people, who are not married.  "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh" (Romans 13:14 (NIV)).  While it was "shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret" (Ephesians 5:12 (NIV)), maybe Matthew was compelled to preach more specifically about masterbation and adultery because "you shall not commit adultery" is one of The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:14 (NIV)).

Since looking at a woman lustfully is equated with the act of physically commiting adultery with her, then masturbation with imagery might be equated with the act of fornication (Matthew 5:28-30 (NIV)).  If a person sins, then burns with passion, and has weak self-control, the scriptures state it is better for that person to marry (1 Corinthians 7:9 (NIV)).  "But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.  The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.  The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.  Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control" (1 Corinthians 7:2-5 (NIV)).  "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral" (Hebrews 13:4 (NIV)).

Bible references about involuntary, nocturnal emissions -

"When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.  If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.  But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.  Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself.  As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.  For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you" (Deuteronomy 23:9-14 (NIV)).

It is important to note that having a nocturnal emission made the person 'unclean', but it was not considered a sin.

Bible references about voluntary emissions or pleasures of the flesh -

'It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret' (Ephesians 5:12 (NIV)).  The Holy Bible is not an appropriate source in which to read specific information about filth because The Holy Bible is sacred.  Strong believers in YaH frequently read The Holy Bible, and they don't want to read offensive material.  However, The Holy Bible presents enough information about sexual immorality for believers to understand and conclude that masterbation makes a person unclean, and even sinful.

"And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell" (Matthew 5:30 (NIV)).

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.  For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever" (1 John 2:15-17 (NIV)).

"Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.  But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people" (Ephesians 5:1-3 (NIV)).

"Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh" (Romans 13:13,14 (NIV)).

"All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath" (Ephesians 2:3 (NIV)).

“‘If a descendant of Aaron has a defiling skin disease or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen" (Leviticus 22:4 (NIV)).

"but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.  Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death" (James 1:14-15 (NIV)).

"As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.  For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry" (1 Peter 4:2,3 (NIV)).

"Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.  For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live" (Romans 8:12,13 (NIV)).

"Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul" (1 Peter 2:11 (NIV)).

"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want" (Galatians 5:16,17 (NIV)).

"He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them.  For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.  All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” (Mark 7:20-23 (NIV)).

"Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God" (2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)).

Commentary

Habitual masturbation or sin becomes the master of the one who indulges in self-gratification. It becomes the habitual master, and it controls the mind, body, and soul. The Messiah said you become the slave to sin (John 8:34; Romans 6:6,7; Romans 6:16; 2 Peter 2:18,19; 1 Corinthians 6:18). If it wasn't your master, you could stop, but you don't stop because it is your master, and you are the slave. You cannot serve two masters because you will eventually prefer to serve one master more than the other master (Matthew 6:24). Sin leads to death, but righteousness leads to life (Romans 6:16; James 1:14,15).

Refuse to release the 'burn of passion' during just one 'enticement', and overcoming future 'enticements' becomes easier and easier.

Learn the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).

The Messiah sacrificed Himself on the cross to defeat all sin. Sin cannot enslave you, if The Messiah is your master (Hebrews 9:26; Romans 6:6,7)!!!

The Messiah disarmed and triumphed over the rulers and authorities of darkness, so He has given His believers the power to take every thought captive (Colossians 2:15; 2 Corinthians 10:5).

When the devil tried to tempt The Messiah, The Messiah always answered, "it is written..." and then quoted a scripture (Matthew 4:4,7,10). Follow The Messiah's teachings and example.

"Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only"" (Matthew 4:10 (NASB)).

"If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.  Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace" (Hebrews 10:26-29 (NIV))?

(I pray to Jesus/Yeshua for forgiveness because "It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret" (Ephesians 5:12 (NIV)).  As a shepherd should rescue one of his endangered flock on the Sabbath, so then shouldn't people be rescued from their secret sins.)
