Baptism in The Father, and The Son, and The Holy Spirit (Trinity)

"For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time" (1 Timothy 2:5,6 (NASB)).

"There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4:4-6 (NASB)).

"Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Luke 3:15,16 (NASB)).

""As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire"" (Matthew 3:11 (NASB)).

"And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit" (Mark 1:7,8 (NASB)).

"Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (Acts 1:4,5 (NASB)).

"Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. "For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:14-17 (NASB)).

"It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. There were in all about twelve men" (Acts 19:1-7 (NASB)).

"Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:4-6 (NASB)). This statement about water seems to be in reference to the water that is released from the mother's womb (flesh) during child birth, not water from baptism.

"and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."" (Acts 16:30,31 (NASB)).

"For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13 (NASB)).

"This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith" (Galatians 3:2 (NASB))?

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19 (NASB)). The Messiah didn't say to baptize them in water and in the name of the Father and the Son and The Holy Spirit. A research of the Greek word used for 'baptizing' determined that the same Greek word was used to describe both types of baptizing, so the Greek word can't be used to differentiate between the two types of baptism.

Commentary

The ministry of John the Baptist offered baptism in water for repentance and the forgiveness of sins (Mark 1:4). The ministry of The Messiah offered baptism in the name of The Father and The Son and a promise of The Holy Spirit. When The Messiah sacrificed His life on the cross, baptism in water was replaced by the new covenant, which offered forgiveness of sins through the sacrificial shedding of His blood, plus the deposit of The Holy Spirit guaranteeing the inheritance of salvation (Hebrews 8:11; Ephesians 1:14). The ministry of John the Baptist was to decrease, and the ministry of The Messiah was to increase (John 3:30). After that event, Apostle Paul seems to have been pretty adamant that there was only one baptism, which is highly likely the baptism in the name of the Father and the Son and The Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:4-6).

Apostle Paul wrote, "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin" (Romans 6:3-7 (NASB)).

Baptism in the name of God (truth) comes with faith (John 14:6). Baptism in The Holy Spirit is a deposit guaranteeing the inheritance of salvation in Heaven (Ephesians 1:13,14). The baptism in the trinity (The Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit) usually happens at the same time because there is only one baptism (Ephesians 4:4-6). However, it is possible to believe in God without receiving The Messiah as Savior, and without receiving The Holy Spirit. The devil is a prime example of one who believes in God, but hasn't been baptized in The Holy Spirit (James 2:19). Additional examples of believers who haven't been baptized in The Holy Spirit are those who have failed to develop loving relationships with The Messiah, so He doesn't 'know' those believers. Those believers will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 7:21-23).

'Acts' in The New Testament describe events in ancient times during a transitional period, when The Holy Spirit was just beginning to get deposited into Christians. According to several scriptures posted on this webpage, the apostles could bless Christians with The Holy Spirit while laying hands on them (Acts 8:14-17; Acts 19:1-7; Acts 9:17). As you know, The Messiah has empowered us with gifts to perform similar deeds, according to the will of God and the strength of belief. Remember Peter could walk on water until he took his eyes off of The Messiah, then he fell into the water and feared for his life. Peter failed the Messiah a number of times, but he never quit, and he later raised Tabitha from the dead. The faith of the apostles and the blessings from The Messiah is what enabled the apostles to perform such remarkable miracles.

When God sends The Holy Spirit to a Christian, the Christian's body becomes a temple containing The Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13,14; 1 Corinthians 6:19). The Holy Spirit will give the Christian 'fruits' which are love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22,23). These 'fruits of the Spirit' will vary in power through time due to several factors which you can read about by clicking here. Christians can empower The Holy Spirit when they speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and especially when they sing songs from the spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20).
