What are the reasons God allows people to get sick?
When Eve and Adam succumbed to satan's temptation to sin, sin entered the world, and sin causes sickness and death (Genesis 2:17; Romans 5:12; Exodus 15:26).
God uses the devil like a tool. For reasons discussed below, God might temporarily shift His protection on us and allow the devil to make us sick (Job 1:6-12 ; 1 Timothy 1:20; 1 Corinthians 5:5).
Jesus/Yeshua said we are to remember and thank Him before each meal for the sacrifice of His body and blood on the cross. People who fail to do this might become weak, sick, or die (1 Corinthians 11:23-30).
When ill, we are to ask for forgiveness of our sins and forgive the people who have sinned against us, so that God will purify us from all unrighteousness and heal us (James 5:16; 1 John 1:9; Matthew 6:12-15).
God uses sickness as one form of discipline or punishment to rebuke us. God disciplines His children so we will repent and produce a harvest of righteousness (Hebrews 12:4-11; Revelation 3:19).
Revenge belongs to God for wrongs done to His children (Romans 12:19; Deuteronomy 30:7).
We are to try to heal the sick while proclaiming, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near’, so that the healing will glorify God and nonbelievers will believe. (Matthew 10:8; John 11:4-15).
Jesus/Yeshua blinded Saul for three days and then directed Ananias to heal him, which caused Saul to convert from a persecutor of Christians into an Apostle of Christ (Acts 9:1-18).
Suffering with illness can produce perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-5).
In sickness, we can learn to receive strength from God to be content whatever the circumstances (Philippians 4:12,13).
When we are bedridden, we are given time to reconsider our priorities, slow down to a more peaceful pace, and make other beneficial changes (Proverbs 3:6; Matthew 6:19-33).
God gave us free will, and freedom includes allowing us to get sick (James 1:13-16; Luke 22:42).
God can use illness as a sign or warning of danger to us, or to the people close to us (Genesis 50:20).
God has a plan that He continues to implement in His time and His way, and we are an integral part of His plan both in sickness and health (Ephesians 1:11; 1 Corinthians 13:9).
Even during sickness, God works for the good of His children (Romans 8:28).
A man was blind since birth so that the work of God would be displayed when he was healed (John 9:1-3).
We suffer with illnesses so that the genuineness of our faith and devotion can be proven, and result in praise, glory and honor of The Messiah (1 Peter 1:7; Job 2:10).
Suffering increases our desire to be with God in Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8; 2 Timothy 2:3).
Illness is a reminder that God comes first, before the family and everything else, because God creates the family and God can take away the family (Luke 14:26; Matthew 6:33; Genesis 22:1-19).
God wants to receive prayers on behalf of the sick (James 5:13-18; Matthew 18:19,20).
When sick in bed, there is time to read God's scriptures (Psalm 119:67,71).
God allows Christians to become sick so that once they are well again, they will know how to comfort other Christians who become sick in the future (2 Corinthians 1:3-7).
God might allow illnesses to test the love and caring of nearby Christians (Mark 12:31).
Sickness often humbles us (Daniel 4:28-34; 2 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Pet 5:5-7).
There might be a demon of sickness possessing the person. (Matthew 8:16; Matthew 17:18; Luke 13:10-16)
Illness reminds us of our mortality and prepares us for the death of our physical bodies (Psalm 23; Hebrews 13:14).
A sick person might not have the protection of God because that person might be a nonbeliever or an unsaved 'Christian' who failed to ask to receive The Holy Spirit, failed to try to follow God's Commandments, and failed to develop a loving relationship with Him (Acts 19:1-7).
Plagues and other mass sufferings might be part of fulfilling prophecies. For example, gathering massive numbers of Jewish people into concentration camps during world war ll may have been the motivating factor which caused them to reclaim their homeland after nearly 2,000 years, fulfilling prophecy (1 Corinthians 13:9).
