Are the ten commandments dead or abolished? No!

No, The 10 Commandments are not dead or abolished!

Do not make the eternal mistake of believing you do not need to abide by The Ten Commandments (Matthew 5:19), and risk losing your chance to enter Heaven (Revelation 22:14). Do not become confused by a few false teachers whom state The Ten Commandments are 'dead', as those teachers indulge in 'word playing' and manipulating semantics (Matthew 19:30).

The Son of God said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished" (Matthew 5:17,18 (NIV)).

"Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:19 (NIV)).

"For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:20 (NIV)). "The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight" (Luke 16:14,15 (NIV)).

Jesus (Yeshua) kept God's Commandments -

"Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV)).

The Son of God incorporated The Ten Commandments into His Two Commandments (Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 22:40). The first Commandment from our Brother, to love the Lord your God, includes the Commandments: no other Gods, no idols, don't misuse God's name, and keep the Sabbath Holy. The second Commandment from our Brother, to love your neighbor as yourself, includes the Commandments: honor your parents, don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't give false testimony, and don't covet (Romans 13:8-10; 1 John 2:7).

Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 19:16-19 (NIV)).

"If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love" (John 15:10 (NIV)). "We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did" (1 John 2:3-6 (NIV)).

Some people can become confused by the wording of Paul's letters or scriptures, causing the misinterpretation of what Paul intended to preach about the Law of Moses -

(Paul was the author of: 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, Hebrews, Titus, 1 Timothy, and 2 Timothy)

In Romans 7 and 8, Paul explains at length that the Law of Moses, The Ten Commandments, cannot prevent mankind from sinning no matter how much mankind wants to avoid sinning. Romans 7 and 8 then explains that only by receiving The Holy Spirit, we are given the power to resist temptations.

"For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good" (Romans 7:11,12 (NIV)). "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 7:24,25 (NIV))!

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:1-4 (NIV)).

Later, in Romans 13, Paul clarifed his earlier letters about the commandments. Paul clarified and described how The Ten Commandments were incorporated into the commandments of Jesus (Yeshua) through 'love' (Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 22:37-40).

Additional scriptures written by Paul which clarify God's Commandments are not dead or abolished:

1 Corinthians 6:9,10; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:5; 1 Timothy 6:1; Hebrews 4:9; Romans 1:29,30; Ephesians 6:1-3; Romans 7:3; Ephesians 4:28; Ephesians 4:25; Romans 7:7; Ephesians 5:3,5; and Galatians 5:14.

God gave Revelations about the future which include keeping His Commandments -

The Revelation scriptures, which were written decades after the death and resurrection of Jesus (Yeshua), clearly state the commandments must be kept to enter Heaven.

"Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus" (Revelation 12:17 (NIV)).

"This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus" (Revelation 14:12 (NIV)).

"Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death" (Revelation 21:7,8 (NIV)).

"Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood" (Revelation 22:14,15 (NIV)).

Additional scriptures from Revelation which clarify God's Commandments are not dead or abolished: Revelation 2:21,22; 9:20,21; and 14:7.

In conclusion, you have to make a choice -

You may choose to fulfill The Ten Commandments (Matthew 5:17) and live as Jesus did (1 John 2:3-6), or you may choose to ingore them and pray The Messiah will forgive you for not trying to abide by his commandments. You may choose too risk losing your chance to enter Heaven (Revelation 22:14). "If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud"" (2 Peter 2:20-22 (NIV)).

The Holy Bible never states there are negative consequences, or that it's wrong to try to abide by The Ten Commandments, before or after the death and resurrection of Jesus (Yeshua).  In fact, The Holy Bible emphasizes the importance of trying to avoid sin, "In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood" (Hebrews 12:4 (NIV)).

Commentary

Paul had to be very cautious how he worded his letters because the issue of salvation was violently disputed during his lifetime. Paul managed this conundrum by writing letters that often created confusion and inspired many questions. Nearly two thousand years later, the issue of salvation continues to be hotly disputed in our modern society, especially among the Jewish people.

In many of Paul's letters, he tried to teach the recipients that eternal life could no longer be earned through righteousness or good deeds, according to the laws of The Old Testament, because the crucifixion of Jesus (Yeshua) had become the new transitional point for receiving eternal life. After His crucifixion, Jesus (Yeshua) became the only gateway to eternal life, according to The New Testament (John 14:6 and 3:36). This transition upset many Jewish people, who had relied upon strict adherence to the customary laws for generations. Many of the Jewish people refused to accept this transition, so they refused to believe Jesus (Yeshua) is The Son of God.

Let's make one point exceedingly clear about salvation, and the point is that God's grace is so magnificent that He saves us through our faith and baptism in the name of The Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:8).  Thank God we don't have to fulfill all of the commandments all of the time to earn eternal life because we truly need to rely on the magnificent grace of God for our salvation. This doesn't mean the commandments are dead, however, so we cannot continue to sin and trample The Son of God underfoot (Hebrews 10:26-29).

Faith must be supported with righteous actions because faith without righteous actions is dead (James 2:14-2). We are directed to let our light shine before other people by accomplishing good deeds that glorify God (Matthew 5:16). The icing on the cake is that our righteous actions are viewed by Jesus (Yeshua) as proof that we love Him (John 14:15). The Son of God is our Savior, not our deeds. (Matthew 19:26).
